Balancing classroom and on-court performance can sometimes be challenging, but Northeast Early College High School senior Austin Tharp encompasses what a student-athlete is all about.

Austin is a two-year varsity basketball player, has run cross country, played catcher for the baseball team, and volunteered as an athletic trainer. While serving in the Northeast student council, he earned honors from the National Honor Society and was named Spectrum News Scholar-Athlete of the Month.

He recently earned the Texas High School Coaches Association & Coaches Education Foundation's First Team Academic All-State honor for maintaining a 4.1 GPA while playing basketball throughout high school.

"Austin is a well-rounded, multi-faceted young man who embodies the true definition of a student-athlete," said John Smith, Northeast Head Basketball Coach. "He balances playing multiple sports with high-level academic success both college and high school courses."

Austin says Coach Smith has been a significant influence in his success.

"Coach takes charge and makes sure we understand his prioritiesthat we are a family first and a team second," Austin said. "He made sure we were checking up on each other and held each other accountable. The first of many years of successful seasons was from Coach Smith and I am glad I had the opportunity to play for him."

Austin has been part of Boys Scout of America since first grade and recently earned an Eagle Scout badge for organizing a donation drive with the Northeast Parent Teacher Student Association to upcycle used Chromebooks for students to use in higher education.

As an elementary student at Doss Elementary, Austin discovered a passion for art. He continued exploring his love for the arts throughout elementary and middle school and recently participated as a lead designer in his high school's fashion show. He plans to pursue art studies after college.

"[Doss] opened my eyes to what I can achieve in the arts, Austin said. It was like was a switch in my brain when I was in elementary that there was something I could do with my art beyond just a creative outlet. Art has helped me a lot, and I hope to help other people through my own art one day."

Through Northeast's early college high school program, Tharp is graduating with an associate's degree and his high school diploma. He is graduating in the top 3% of his class and will be attending The University of Texas at Austin this Fall to study Studio Art with scholarships from the Moody Foundation and Austin Rotary Club.

"If kids like Austin grew on trees, I'd definitely plant a grove," said Coach Smith.
